Smart snacks in schoolsmart

Starting in school year 2014-15, all foods sold at school during the school day will need to meet nutrition standards. The Smart Snacks in School regulation applies to foods sold a la carte, in the school store, and vending machines. The new regulations also cover fundraisers during the school day.

USDA recently published practical, science-based nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold to children at school during the school day. The standards, required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, will allow schools to offer healthier snack foods to children, while limiting junk food. Click here to learn more!

The health of today’s school environment continues to improve. Students across the country are now offered healthier school lunches with more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The Smart Snacks in School standards will build on those healthy advancements and ensure that kids are only offered tasty and nutritious foods during the school day. Smart Snacks in School also support efforts by school food service staff, school administrators, teachers, parents and the school community, all working hard to instill healthy habits in students.

Let’s Celebrate Healthy Classrooms!

In schools throughout the year there are multiple celebratory occasions including birthdays, holidays, and special events. These events are fun and provide an important sense of community, but offering sweet treats so frequently can cause unhealthy eating habits. The Food Service Department wants to supply the students with healthier choices while they celebrate. Why purchase through Food Service?

Less Hassle. Say goodbye to extra trips to the always-crowded grocery store. Give food service a call.

Healthier choices. Our celebration snacks meet the USDA “Smart Snacks in Schools” regulations.

Time Saver. Let the food service department prepare and deliver your student’s celebratory snacks.

More Variety. Kids are loaded up with cakes and cookies. Try something different and healthier this year.

The following are healthier items that can be purchased through food service for birthday parties or other celebrations.

Let’s Celebrate Cupcakes
Whole Grain Rice Krispy Treats
