THE FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT of Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) strives to keep the children of the district healthy and focused. New in the 2014/2015 school year, PPS now participates in the Community Eligibility Provision which allows all students in the district to eat for free, regardless of their financial standing.
Beginning in the 2012/2013 school year, the school menus were designed to meet strict guidelines set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture. The guidelines are based on the latest nutrition research from leading associations and a panel of experts in health and nutrition. A Registered Dietitian prepares and analyzes all PPS menus. Since 2012, the Pittsburgh menus have changed drastically and now include the following:
- All grains served are whole grains
- Fruit options available at breakfast and lunch
- Wide variety of vegetables served at lunch
- <10% of calories from saturated fat
- Lower sodium
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
- Fat-free or 1% milk offered only

The Food Service Department recognizes the importance of nourishing children in order to optimize learning, and therefore every student is encouraged to eat breakfast every day. Studies show that students that eat breakfast at school:
- preform better on standardized tests,
- have improved concentration, alertness, comprehension, memory, and learning,
- have better attendance,
- have fewer disciplinary office referrals,
- are less likely to be overweight,
- have improved nutrition,
- eat more fruits,
- drink more milk, and
- consume a wider variety of foods.

Look for the Grab-N-Go breakfast option to be available at select schools.
Each year, many students present with allergies, religious preferences, and medical conditions that affect their diets. The Food Service Department works with the parents and students to come up with a modified breakfast and lunch menu so that the student can eat school meals safely with his or her peers.
